beat plastic pollutionOn World Environment Day 2025, the Environmental Development and Earthcare Network (EDEN) called on the Nigerian government to hold plastic-producing companies accountable for their environmental impact. EDEN emphasized the necessity for manufacturers to take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products, particularly single-use plastics, which significantly contribute to pollution in Nigeria.

The organization advocated for the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policies, compelling companies to manage the waste generated from their products. EDEN also highlighted the importance of transitioning to sustainable packaging alternatives and urged the government to enforce regulations that promote environmental stewardship among producers.

This appeal aligns with broader environmental efforts in Nigeria, where plastic pollution remains a pressing issue. For instance, Lagos State has initiated measures to phase out single-use plastics, encouraging the adoption of biodegradable materials and reusable alternatives to mitigate environmental degradation.

EDEN’s call to action underscores the critical role of corporate accountability in addressing plastic pollution and the need for collaborative efforts between the government, industry stakeholders, and civil society to foster a more sustainable environment.
