World Environment Day 2025, scheduled for June 5, focuses on the urgent need to end plastic pollution globally. The Republic of Korea will host the event, emphasizing collective action to protect the planet’s future. Organizations such as the Center for Arid Zone and Wetlands Ecology (CAZE), Federal University Dutse, Netlink Conservation Organization, Federal University of Technology Akure, and Initiative Sustainable Agriculture and Ecological Restoration are collaborating to raise awareness through campaigns, virtual programs, and conservation efforts.
Plastic pollution has widespread effects, including environmental damage to oceans, rivers, and landscapes, health risks from exposure to toxic chemicals and microplastics, and economic impacts like loss of tourism revenue and damage to fisheries and agriculture. Additionally, it contributes to biodiversity loss as marine life, birds, and other wildlife are harmed by plastic debris, entanglement, and ingestion.
The event aims to inspire collective action against plastic pollution, highlighting the need for effective solutions to mitigate its effects.
