WaterAid Nigeria and Stakeholders Collaborate to Build Climate Resilience Through WASH

WaterAid Nigeria, in partnership with key stakeholders, is intensifying efforts to address the growing challenges of climate change by enhancing resilience through water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. Recognizing that climate change severely affects access to clean water and sanitation especially in vulnerable communities, this collaboration aims to embed climate adaptation strategies into WASH planning and implementation.

The initiative brings together government bodies, development partners, civil society, and community leaders to promote sustainable WASH infrastructure that can withstand climate-related shocks such as droughts, floods, and irregular rainfall patterns. At the heart of the program is a push for policies and investments that ensure climate-resilient WASH systems, particularly in underserved regions already grappling with poverty and limited resources.

During a stakeholder meeting in Abuja, WaterAid emphasized that climate change is not just an environmental issue but a public health crisis, as it increases the risk of waterborne diseases and threatens access to safe water. The organization called for increased collaboration to develop early warning systems, strengthen water resource management, and prioritize climate financing for vulnerable populations.

This integrated approach seeks not only to build physical infrastructure but also to raise awareness and build local capacity, ensuring long-term resilience and improved quality of life for communities most affected by climate impacts.
