Nigeria’s Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has called on China to support Nigeria in combating illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing along its coastline, stressing that the practice threatens marine biodiversity, food security, and the livelihoods of coastal communities.
During discussions with the Chinese Ambassador, he urged stronger collaboration in maritime surveillance, technology transfer, and capacity-building to protect Nigeria’s territorial waters. It was emphasized that sustainable fisheries management is essential for economic growth and ocean health, and welcomed China’s potential partnership in strengthening regulatory frameworks and promoting responsible fishing practices.
