Climate Change in NigeriaNigeria’s recent submission of its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) outlines ambitious targets—including a 32.2% reduction in emissions by 2030, 100% electricity access, 50% renewable energy in the power mix, and 9% annual growth in new electricity connections—yet faces severe implementation hurdles. The ambitious pledge, estimated at US $337 billion, depends heavily on international finance (US $270 billion, or 80%) with only US $67 billion to be raised domestically. Existing challenges such as tight fiscal space, rising debt, food and energy security issues, institutional weakness, and a history of poor project accountability raise serious doubts about the country’s readiness to deliver these commitments.
