The Nigerian Federal Government officially inaugurated a Technical Working Group on July 24, 2025 in Abuja. Its mandate is to develop the country’s first National Carbon Budget, aligning with Nigeria’s obligations under the Climate Change Act, 2021 and commitments made in its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. The initiative spans multiple sectors, including energy, transport, agriculture, water, finance, civil society, academia, youth, and women-led climate groups—ensuring inclusive stakeholder participation. The goal is to set a five‑year emissions ceiling (2026–2030) that integrates with Nigeria’s broader economic and development planning, supports emission tracking, drives innovation, promotes green job creation, and boosts resilience to climate hazards like drought, flooding, and desertification.
