Electric BuildingsNew York has become the first U.S. state to mandate that most newly constructed buildings be built entirely electric, banning fossil‑fuel systems such as gas or oil in new construction, with limited exemptions. The All‑Electric Buildings Act, originally passed in 2023 and formally approved by the State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council in late July 2025, requires new residential buildings up to seven stories and commercial or industrial buildings under 100,000 sq ft to be fully electric starting Dec. 31, 2025; larger buildings must comply by 2029. The policy aims to curb building-sector emissions currently responsible for about 31% of New York’s carbon output.
