Chronic FloodsA new infrastructure project, funded by a $250 million World Bank loan, has been implemented in Can Tho City, Viet Nam, to protect 420,000 residents from chronic tidal flooding. The “Can Tho Urban Development and Resilience Project” includes a flood-defense system with tidal sluice gates, ship locks, and river embankments. The project also features new bridges to promote development on higher ground and utilizes advanced digital systems like the Flood Risk Management Information System (FRMIS) to enable data-driven risk management. This combined approach of physical defenses and smart systems has successfully reduced flooding, improved economic stability, and enhanced public health and urban planning for the city.
