NEMA warns of Flooding in Rivers StateThe National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued an urgent alert, warning that Rivers State and 11 other states across Nigeria are at imminent risk of severe flooding, based on forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMeT). The affected areas in Rivers State include Ahoada West, Ahoada East, Andoni, and Opobo/Nkoro, among others. In response, NEMA has launched a National Preparedness and Response Campaign, which includes deploying field officers, disseminating early warning messages, pre-positioning relief supplies, desilting critical drainage channels, inspecting key infrastructure, and engaging traditional and community leaders to enhance local readiness. Authorities emphasize that inter-agency collaboration and heightened public vigilance are essential to prevent devastating losses following historical flood events that have displaced populations and caused billions in damages.
