A recent social media poll by NatureNews Africa has shown that most respondents consider carbon emissions the primary cause of climate change.
The poll, conducted on the platform’s official X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts, aimed to assess public perceptions regarding the main factors driving the global climate crisis.
Participants were asked to choose the biggest contributor to climate change from four options: carbon emissions, overpopulation, deforestation, and industrial farming.
A significant 70% of the responses identified carbon emissions as the top cause, indicating a strong public understanding of how fossil fuel combustion leads to the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Carbon emissions, especially from energy generation, transportation, and heavy industries, are widely acknowledged by scientists as the primary drivers of global warming and its adverse effects on the planet.
Overpopulation ranked second, with 25% of respondents selecting it as the major factor. This suggests that many people believe the growing human population places significant strain on natural resources and ecosystems, indirectly contributing to climate change by increasing demand for food, water, energy, and housing.
