In a recent address at the UN Headquarters in New York, Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), underscored the critical need for multilateral action to address pressing environmental challenges, including climate change, land degradation, biodiversity loss, and pollution. She emphasized that investing in clean energy transitions, restoring nature, and tackling pollutants not only advances the Sustainable Development Goals but also bolsters economies, creates jobs, safeguards human health, and promotes peace and security.

Andersen highlighted UNEP’s commitment to supporting member states with scientific expertise and convening power, building on over 50 years of facilitating environmental agreements.

She also pointed to upcoming opportunities for enhanced multilateral cooperation, such as the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Nexus Assessment, which reveals that nature-positive models could unlock significant economic benefits and job creation by 2030.
