Global lakes are in decline due to climate change, over-abstraction, and pollution. According to a UNEP article, these threats are destabilizing the hydrological cycle, leading to droughts, intense flooding, and toxic algal blooms. Solutions to this problem include advancing integrated water resources management, adopting a basin-level approach, and investing in data monitoring.
Although the technology exists to solve these issues, the key is having the collective will to treat lakes as precious resources.
