Oceans Power to capture carbonA European expert group has concluded that while marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) technologies — such as boosting plankton or seaweed growth, or chemically extracting CO₂ from seawater — hold promise for capturing carbon, they are not yet ready for large-scale deployment because of risks and uncertain verification.

The report emphasizes the urgent need for strong monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) frameworks to ensure these interventions truly remove carbon and avoid harming marine ecosystems.
