On June 5, 2025, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) commemorated World Environment Day in Jeju, South Korea, under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.” UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen delivered a speech emphasizing the urgent need to address plastic pollution, highlighting its detrimental effects on oceans, wildlife, and human health.
Andersen acknowledged the Republic of Korea’s leadership in environmental action, noting its significant strides in reducing plastic waste and promoting recycling. She emphasized the importance of transforming the plastics economy through three key actions:
- Eliminating Problematic Plastics: Implementing bans on unnecessary plastic products and encouraging sustainable alternatives.
- Promoting Innovation: Encouraging the development of reusable systems and increasing the use of recycled content in new products.
- Ensuring Circularity: Establishing effective waste collection and recycling infrastructures, supported by sustainable financing mechanisms.
The speech also highlighted the global momentum towards a legally binding international agreement to combat plastic pollution, with over 150 countries expressing interest in negotiations. The event featured various initiatives, including a 4,800 km journey by British cyclist Kate Strong on a handmade bamboo bike and the launch of the music video “TikTik Plastic” by Indian film stars and musicians, aiming to raise awareness and inspire action against plastic pollution.
