Environmental CourtsThe CRUX Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development Foundation (CERADF) has formally urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to immediately reactivate and strengthen dedicated Environmental Courts and Tribunals to address the severe and escalating sanitation and waste-management crisis in Abuja. CERADF noted that the existing mobile courts are now insufficient to handle the scale and complexity of environmental infractions, which include widespread waste accumulation, blocked drainages leading to flooding, and increased public health risks across various districts.

The group specifically recommended the establishment of a central Environmental Court within the FCT High Court and tribunals across all six Area Councils to provide a robust judicial framework for speedy trials, consistent enforcement of environmental laws, and firm sanctions against violators, which they argue is essential to strengthen environmental governance and align the capital with international standards.
