The Nigerian federal government plans to set up agricultural mechanisation service centres in each of its six geopolitical zones, according to the Minister of Agriculture, Senator Abubakar Kyari. These hubs will support farmers by offering training, equipment repairs, and coordinating the transfer of modern farming technologies.
The initiative emphasizes creating machinery tailored to Nigerian conditions, with a focus on standardisation, local assembly, and skilled technician support. A partnership with Egypt’s Tanta Motors will help mass-produce and commercialise local innovations like weeders, planters, and threshers under joint branding. By doing so, the government aims to make mechanisation more accessible to smallholder farmers, boost food security, and foster job creation.
