Renewable energy is projected to become the world’s largest source of electricity “by 2026 at the latest,” overtaking coal, according to a recent International Energy Agency forecast. In 2024, renewables, including wind, solar, hydro, bioenergy and geothermal, generated over 4,000 TWh, and are on track to exceed 6,000 TWh by 2026, accounting for 36% of global power versus coal’s 32%. Wind and solar alone are expected to meet more than 90% of the growth in electricity demand in 2026.
