new climateThe United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has announced the reinstatement of its Climate Weeks in 2025, introducing a revamped format aimed at accelerating the transition from climate ambition to tangible implementation. These biannual events are designed to bridge the gap between high-level policy discussions and on-the-ground climate action, particularly in the Global South.

The first Climate Week of 2025 is scheduled to take place from May 19 to 23 in Panama City, with a second event planned in Africa ahead of the COP30 summit in Belém, Brazil, later in the year. This new structure consolidates various UNFCCC-mandated meetings, capacity-building sessions, and policy dialogues into a streamlined format, reducing logistical complexities and environmental impacts associated with multiple dispersed events.

Key objectives of the Climate Weeks include:

  • Advancing discussions on climate finance and the development of carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
  • Facilitating the submission of ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans.
  • Promoting a just transition away from fossil fuels and supporting climate-related gender and inclusivity issues.

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell emphasized that this approach aims to “help bridge the gap between technical dialogues and stakeholder engagement focused on real-economy solutions and real-world implementation,” ultimately delivering faster progress and concrete outcomes that benefit all economies and people’s daily lives .

The reinstatement of Climate Weeks follows their cancellation in 2024 due to financial constraints. Improved funding, including contributions from countries like Japan and Germany, as well as philanthropic support from figures such as Michael Bloomberg, has enabled the UNFCCC to resume these critical forums for climate dialogue and action .

By focusing on both ambition and implementation, the 2025 Climate Weeks aim to provide a more effective platform for nations to collaborate on climate solutions, ensuring that policy commitments translate into meaningful action on the ground.
